Subsequently he embarked on formal Postgraduate Medical Training in the United States.

Dr. Katsetos was a Resident in Anatomic Pathology at the Institute of Pathology, Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh PA (1983-1985). He subsequently pursued two Neuropathology fellowships, the first at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island (1985-1987) and the second at the University of Virginia in Chatlottesville, VA (1987-1989). Furthermore, he was a Fellow in Anatomic and Diagnostic Pathology, as well as Recanati Research Fellow, at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City (1989-1990).

In 1990 he joined the faculty at Hahnemann University School of Medicine, as Assistant Professor of Pathology, Neurology and Neurosurgery, and served as Director of Neuropathology(1991-1994) and was  Assistant Professor of Pathology at Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University (1994-1995).

Following a two-year stint doing basic research in Tumor Biology and Neuroimmunology, at Temple University School of Medicine (1996-1998), he joined the Department of Pediatrics, MCP Hahnemann University at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children as Research Associate Professor (1998-2003), and then as Research Professor Drexel University College of Medicine (2003-to date).

In 2002 he received a Ph.D. degree in Neuropathology at the Gade Institute, University of Bergen, Norway (thesis title: "Neurobiology of Class III -Tubulin: Differential Cellular Expression in Human Nervous System Development and Neoplasia.")  http://www.uib.no/info/dr_grad/2002/katstetos.htm

Dr. Katsetos has authored and co-authored over 80 publications, including peer-reviewed Research Articles, scientific Reviews, Editorials, and Book Chapters.  Additionally, he serves as a regular reviewer for a number of U.S. and International Biomedical Science Journals. In short his research interests include brain pathology/tumor biology, mechanisms of neuronal injury in Cerebral Palsy, pathological and immunological aspects of Multiple Sclerosis and nervous system vasculitis, neurotoxicology, and neuropathologic correlates in schizophrenia and autism.

Thus, Dr.Katsetos is known for work on embryonal tumors of the nervous system such as the cerebellar medulloblastomas, common in children, the desmoplastic  medulloblastoma, and the  glioblastomas, most common lethal brain tumors in adults. He has received an Established Investigator Award from the St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children and continues active research on brain tumors, cerebral palsy and autism.

MEDICAL EDUCATION: Dr. Katsetos has taught medical students and Pathology, Pediatrics, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Radiology, Housestaff and has mentored graduate research students and visiting scholars and faculty members from many nations.  He is an advocate for the disabled using the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act as a model.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO HELLENISM. In addition to his active academic medical career, Dr. Katsetos maintains a longstanding and abiding interest in the History of Medicine (contributions of Greek scholars to Ottoman medicine during the Tanzimat period, 19th century), as well as in Modern Greek History, including post-Byzantine historiography as it relates to cultural, educational and political aspects of the Ottoman Rum Millet and Romiosyne, the natural precursor of the Modern Greek nation. Additionally, he has a special interest in the historiography pertaining to linguistically diversified groups of Romiosyne (Armâni/Vlachs, Arvanites/Arvanitovlachs, Karamanlides) as the vehicles of Greek continuity in Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace, whose contributions were, in a historical context, paramount in shaping Modern Hellenic identity and statehood.

Dr. Katsetos is a firm believer in the need for a revival in Greek-US strategic ties and seeks an augmented role for Greek-America in supporting the rightful causes of Hellenism  in Eastern Mediterranean and beyond.  He embraces rigorous research approach to a wide range of issues and caveats concerning the Republic of Greece such as:

The Demographic Problem of low fertility and In-Migration; the false and artificial promotion of “ethno-linguistic minorities”; the problem of Makedonski (Slav Macedonian) irredentist nationalism in FYROM-Skopje; the Airspace violations over the Aegean; the harassment of the Patriarchate; and the Cyprus issue. Dr. Katsetos believes strongly that an energized and better organized Greek-American Community can make a superb contribution to Hellenism, where it counts, right here, in the United States.

Furthermore, Dr. Katsetos embraces many other stated goals of DSA, such as: the need for an Elite Greek-American University in America; the need for increased intellectual activity within Omogenia; the revival and restructuring of our organizations under an umbrella entity, a Conference of Presidents; the need for Mentoring of our young for admission to Professional Schools, especially those interested in the Health Professions.

The improvement of the Health Care and Educational Systems, especially the University Education in the Republic of Greece is an additional Area of interest and concern. Last but not least, Dr. Katsetos embraces the strong DSA support for: Human Rights, the Democratic Imperative around the world, the Rule of Law and International Treaties and is also vigorously opposed to discrimination of any kind, especially that against women, the minorities, and the handicapped. Moreover, his tenacious and unequivocal support for the rightful causes of Hellenism in Eastern Mediterranean, is well known among the multitude of his friends in the US, in Europe and beyond.

Finally, his broad knowledge of issues, coupled with his sober but politically discerning approach and belief in strategic planning, make Dr. Katsetos, a versatile and promising Board Member of our Think Tank.
